AMD A-series (Llano) price announced by HP

Following on from this morning's Llano announcement from AMD , HP has announced a range of Llano-powered laptops. some of which will be available in the UK within a couple of weeks.

Officially called the A-Series APUs, HP will be using the chips in four new ranges. The more consumer-orientated dv6 and dv7 laptops are expected in July and will cost from a very reasonable £599. Exact specifications aren't yet available for these models, but we'd expect them to be very similar to the current AMD-based ones, such as the HP Pavilion dv7-4035sa .

In mid-august you can expect the HP ProBook 4535s, from £375 exc VAT, but leading the charge and fully-specified on HP's website is the HP ProBook 6465b, on sale from June 27th.

The HP ProBook 6465b costs from £490, actually £588 inc VAT. For that we're presuming you get the minimum specification listed on the site. That would consist of a dual-core A4-3310MX APU, which runs at 2.1GHz and can Turbo Core (AMD's equivalent of Intel's Turbo Boost technology) up to 2.5GHz - it has a 2MB L2 cache.

It's hard to know how this will compare to the quad-core 2.4GHz chip we recently tested . But it certainly isn't going to compete head-to-head with Intel's Sandy Bridge chips in terms of application performance.

Without seeing the final product it's impossible to make a judgement, but at first glance AMD seem to be in the right place when it comes to pricing for what must be considered (without criticism) a budget mobile processor.
